I graduated last summer, 2015, from a Contemporary Jewellery design degree, so it has been a year since I have graduated. I really wonder what other design graduates are doing after graduation. I guess those who have the money can establish their own business and those who won competitions will have a better chance of getting a job.
I guess I was probably lucky that I landed myself a role in an office doing Account Assistant, introduced by a family friend. I know, it has nothing to do with my design degree, and I had to learn things all over again. However, I need money to live, everyone does, and it wasn’t a badly paid job. Throughout the year, I was still looking for internships and other employment opportunities, I don’t want to stay in an office for the rest of my life.
Last week, I have started my first internship at a jewellery design studio. They were trying to complete pieces and ship them out to customers ASAP, so we were all pressurised to get things done quickly and perfectly. In those 3 days, all I did was sanding resin pieces, assembling the jewellery and packing. I have to say I didn’t learn anything new, but it is a great opportunity to see how a small jewellery business work, to ask questions about almost anything, and just to get myself back into the industry. I guess if I spend more time outside of the industry, I might eventually give up and be devastated.
I think it’s still early for me to comment on my progress, but I believe this is a very good start and an unmissable opportunity to absorb as many skills and information as I can. I will update again on how I am doing at this internship.
